Beautiful Open Scale Using Harmonics & Ringing Open Strings

acoustic harmonics open scales May 15, 2026

There are many things about the guitar that are unique and special. One of those things is that we have multiple places to play many notes, and this gives us the possibility of playing the same patterns in many different ways.

This can be frustrating, but is also an opportunity. Each different way to play something emphasizes certain qualities of the instrument and allows a different type of expressiveness.

One of my very favorite things to do is to let open strings ring out when I play melodies or harmonic ideas. There is something extremely beautiful and otherworldly about this sound, and this simple idea has provided me with countless hours of enjoyment.

In this video I take a look at one pattern that is an open scale, morphing into a scalar pattern using harmonics. This combination is magic and I think you'll love the sound of it.

I hope it provides you with some inspiration to always be exploring and enjoying the guitar in its beauty and complexity.
