Hello, I'm Trent Baarspul.

I'm a professional guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and teacher who loves to practice and play music. I've spent a lot of time working out the best ways to practice, and learning from my mistakes. I love sharing what I've learned and helping others progress and see what they can do with music.

My Story

I've played music since I was 6 years old, starting on the piano. But at 12 I picked up a guitar and I was hooked. From that moment I knew that playing guitar was all I wanted to do.

Since then I've practiced for thousands of hours, studied with some amazing teachers, gone to music school and performed all over the US and the world. I've taught and performed professionally for 20 years now, and I'm passionate about sharing what I've learned.

Here are some pillars of my approach to music, and what I'm trying to pass on to my students:

  • Increasing the effectiveness of your practice time makes for the most efficient progress and development.
  • Fundamentals are key. You don't have to learn every single possible pattern, but you need to have mastery over a set of patterns in order to enjoy music and be creative.
  • Everyone can and should learn to improvise. It doesn't have to be complex and flashy, but accessing this part of playing will make you a more confident and creative person. You'll also have more fun!
  • Maintaining a constructive mental attitude is key to making progress. Work on a constructive and curious mental attitude. Look at other musicians and let yourself be inspired. Try and discover what elements of their playing you like, and emulate those things.

Besides music I love my family, the outdoors, archery, working on cars, reading, and fixing and building things. Life is so full of amazing things! I don't understand boredom. Learning music from a young age gave me the mental framework to problem solve, and I've applied that to many different areas of life.
